The modelling (conceptual and numerical) results of the GLORI project will provide tools to better predict where, along the relevant channels of South Tyrol, these large sediment inputs will result in potentially hazardous aggradation processes. Furthermore, GLORI’s outputs will assist river managers of South Tyrol (namely the Dept. of Hydraulic Engineering of the Province) to identify the river reaches which most likely will undergo significant morphological changes – in planform and/or in elevation – in the next decades, as a consequence of varying runoff and sediment regimes due to the expected glacier retreat. This will also help design efficient and sustainable river restoration interventions, which otherwise would be doomed to possible failure.
